Hey, I've got a few thoughts and was wondering what people thought.
For a start, do you agree with those movies that came out that digitally erased the twin towers. It seems a bit callous, and looks like they're trying to sweep it under the carpet. Others could argue that a movie like Zoolander ( a guilty culprit ) may have suffered if it suddenly showed them in the background. Nothing can take you out of a wacky comedy more than an in your face reminder of a terrible tragedy. Like watching your grandmother dying while Married..with Children is on TV.
Then there's Gangs Of New York. The ending of the film left me with a strange feeling. As the Twin Towers appeared upon the ever growing skyline, I felt that it would be a much more powerful image for them to dissapear again. The film shows an almost forgotten part of New York, and America's history, and how it was shaped...and yet the film-makers are deliberately ignoring this major cultural, horrific event that will forever haunt New York, and all of America. They spend 3 hours showing us one event, and then ignore another in the process. It seemed a bit naivly sentimental to leave the Towers there, whereas them fading away would've left the film with a powerful final image that reminded people of the ongoing battles that humanity are forced to face and fight with.
Finally, remember the Mambo Kings ? That movie features the Twin Towers in one shot even though it's set in the fifties. Nothing we like more than filming movies set decades earlier...and getting them wrong. So, my point (finally), is that with all this digital removal...do you think that maybe twenty years from now, when they're setting films in the 80's and 90's, that they will use CGI to reinstate the Towers, for continuity ?
